about

I wrote Uncharted to encourage anyone who is taking a path in life that’s unconventional or off the beaten track in some way. It’s written in the first person, and the character who is singing is a young woman who is breaking free of expectations and making her own path.

Both Uncharted and Every Day is a Gift have personal significance, because both songs were inspired, in part, by my journey through ovarian cancer in 2003. At the time I was diagnosed I was a lawyer-entrepreneur at a legal informatics company I had founded with my husband. Before starting the company, while working as a lawyer at several firms in San Francisco, I had an active moonlighting career as a jazz singer with my own trio, and was also a founding member and soloist with the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir--opening for Bonnie Raitt, recording with Linda Ronstadt, and performing with Joan Baez, among many other luminaries.

Although my husband and I had started our own business to have more time for creative pursuits, the demands of our company ironically meant less time for music. And I was also not feeling well. After at least two years of textbook symptoms that went undiagnosed, I was finally diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003. (visit www.ovarian.org/symptoms.php for more info. about ovarian cancer symptoms and risk factors)

While undergoing chemotherapy after a successful surgery, one of my musician friends, Ben Heveroh, asked me what I was going to do, now that I had this wake-up call. I told him a long list of classes I hoped to take—music theory, musicianship, piano, etc. so that I could write songs. He said, “classes are fine, but you don’t have to wait to start writing.” He said “You have a voice and you have something to say—you can start writing songs right now.” He gave me the permission that I somehow had not been able to give myself. And cancer gave me the gift of immediacy. So right there and then, I jumped headlong toward my bucket list desire to write songs.

lyrics

UNCHARTED

Staring at the cracks in the ceiling
Trying to find a way to my dreams and
Wondering when I'm ever gonna get there
It seems so close I could reach out and take it
Then I worry I might not make it
But I can’t get caught up I just gotta
Feel the fear and do it anyway

No more waiting No more hesitating

No map to show me the right way to go
No satellite, No well-paved road
My future destination is unknown
I’ll find my way in the dark by the stars in the night
By the song in my heart I know I’ll be alright
Open hearted, Living life uncharted

I may not know just where I'm going
But every day I’ll learn from not knowing
Won’t take advice from unhappy people--that's my only rule
They say I should be realistic
I think they’re just pessimistic
And even if it makes me a misfit
I gotta go my own way

So no more waiting No more hesitating

No map to show me the right way to go
No satellite, No well-paved road
My future destination is unknown
I’ll find my way in the dark by the stars in the night
By the song in my heart I know I’ll be alright
Open hearted, Living life uncharted

I gotta learn to trust my instincts
And not to overthink it
Every flower’s born knowing how to bloom

No map to show me the right way to go
No satellite, No well-paved road
My future destination is unknown
I’ll find my way in the dark by the stars in the night
By the song in my heart I know I’ll be alright
Open hearted, Open hearted Open hearted
Living life uncharted, uncharted

Patricia Bahia Los Angeles, California

An award-winning songwriter, singer, and cancer survivor, Patricia Bahia wrote her first song in 2004 after a cancer diagnosis prompted her to leave her career as a lawyer, trade her briefcases for guitar cases, and start living her bucket list life as a songwriter.

Her music is highly melodic pop and draws comparisons to Sara Bareilles, Colbie Caillat, and Brandi Carlile.
