I wrote Uncharted to encourage anyone who is taking a path in life that’s unconventional or off the beaten track in some way. It’s written in the first person, and the character who is singing is a young woman who is breaking free of expectations and making her own path.
Both Uncharted and Every Day is a Gift have personal significance, because both songs were inspired, in part, by my journey through ovarian cancer in 2003. At the time I was diagnosed I was a lawyer-entrepreneur at a legal informatics company I had founded with my husband. Before starting the company, while working as a lawyer at several firms in San Francisco, I had an active moonlighting career as a jazz singer with my own trio, and was also a founding member and soloist with the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir--opening for Bonnie Raitt, recording with Linda Ronstadt, and performing with Joan Baez, among many other luminaries.
Although my husband and I had started our own business to have more time for creative pursuits, the demands of our company ironically meant less time for music. And I was also not feeling well. After at least two years of textbook symptoms that went undiagnosed, I was finally diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003. (visit

While undergoing chemotherapy after a successful surgery, one of my musician friends, Ben Heveroh, asked me what I was going to do, now that I had this wake-up call. I told him a long list of classes I hoped to take—music theory, musicianship, piano, etc. so that I could write songs. He said, “classes are fine, but you don’t have to wait to start writing.” He said “You have a voice and you have something to say—you can start writing songs right now.” He gave me the permission that I somehow had not been able to give myself. And cancer gave me the gift of immediacy. So right there and then, I jumped headlong toward my bucket list desire to write songs.
