about

It was a rainy afternoon in February when I got together with my co-writers Athena and Diana to write the song that would be Good Day. We wanted to write something happy and upbeat even though the weather was dreary, and the traffic was horrible. In Los Angeles, traffic is usually bad, but when it rains, it gets even worse. This is because it hardly ever rains in L.A., so people don’t know how to drive in rain, which leads to more accidents, and more delays.

We started talking about the little things that can make your day, like going out for your favorite coffee at the coffee shop, and having the cute guy at the counter wink at you, finding money in the pocket of your jeans, having kids wave at you from a school bus, hearing one of your favorite songs on the radio. Athena started playing the chord progression on her guitar, and we all chimed in with lyric and melody ideas. My favorite line is in the chorus: “The sun may shine, or the sun may hide, nothing’s gonna take the happy, nothing’s gonna take the happy off my face.”

The song embodies the belief that no matter what happens, I can choose to have a good day.

lyrics

GOOD DAY

Got my hot cappuccino, don't forget the whipped cream
Cute guy at the counter winked at me
I reach into my pocket of my old blue jeans
And find forty five bucks oh yeah, shopping spree
And nothings in my way, nothings in my way, yeah I know

It’s gonna be a good day, it’s gonna be a good day
Maybe there’ll be April showers
I will stop to smell the flowers anyway
The sun may shine, or the sun may hide
Nothin’s gonna take the happy
Nothin’s gonna take the happy off my face
It’s gonna be a good day

Behind a big yellow school bus the kids are waving hello
And all you need is luh uh uv is on the radio
Driving up to the toll booth, somebody covered my fare
I pay the favor forward so someone else can share in this
Nothing’s in the way kind of day, yeah I know

It’s gonna be a good day, it’s gonna be a good day
Maybe there’ll be April showers
I will stop to smell the flowers anyway
The sun may shine, or the sun may hide
Nothin’s gonna take the happy
Nothin’s gonna take the happy off my face
It’s gonna be a good day
It’s gonna be a good day

Doot doot do doot do do do do do doot doot
Doot doot do doot do do do do do doot doot
Doot doot do do doot doot doot doot doot doot doot

It’s gonna be a good day, it’s gonna be a good day
Maybe there’ll be April showers
I will stop to smell the flowers anyway
The sun may shine, or the sun may hide
Nothin’s gonna take the happy
Nothin’s gonna take the happy off my face
It’s gonna be a good day
It’s gonna be a good day
It’s gonna be a good day

Patricia Bahia Los Angeles, California

An award-winning songwriter, singer, and cancer survivor, Patricia Bahia wrote her first song in 2004 after a cancer diagnosis prompted her to leave her career as a lawyer, trade her briefcases for guitar cases, and start living her bucket list life as a songwriter.

Her music is highly melodic pop and draws comparisons to Sara Bareilles, Colbie Caillat, and Brandi Carlile.
