You know those times when you’re down about something in your life (could be relationship, job, family), and when you try to fix it, or try to change it, you make it even worse? That’s what Blue on top of Blue is about. As much as I would love to be resilient, cheery and happy all the time, there are definitely times when circumstances get me down, blue, and in a funk. And sometimes trying to make a situation better actually makes it worse. This song is about one of those times.
My co-writer Miranda Zeiger had the line “blue on top of blue” in a different song she started but hadn’t finished. She played the unfinished song at a “works in progress” workshop and I suggested we write a completely new song based on that line. We did, basing it loosely on the experience of leaving the San Francisco Bay area and relocating to Southern California.
Miranda has a fantastic ear for harmony vocals and added her unique vocals to the track. Jon Hayes’ atmospheric guitar work creates the mood the song needed. Joe Ayoub added bass, and Kevin Hayes added tasteful drums.

lyrics
BLUE ON TOP OF BLUE
What made me so sure, nothing’s clear anymore
Why was I dyin' to get away?
I was tryin’ to break free, now I'm only broke and lonely
In the sunshine wishing for the rain
Thought I had a new start, clean slate
A fresh coat of shiny paint
But I traded in a little for a few
Like I always do
I painted blue on top of blue, blue on top of blue
This was supposed to be a picture perfect scene
In the postcard I planned to write
But I'm empty as an echo, so dry it’s hard to swallow
I’m missing everything I left behind
Thought I had a new start, clean slate
A fresh coat of shiny paint
But I traded in a little for a few
I painted blue on top of blue, blue on top of blue
I painted blue on top of blue, blue on top of
Blue-- not my favorite color
I just can’t seem to paint in any other
I keep painting
Blue on top of blue, blue on top of blue
I painted blue on top of, blue on top of, blue on top of blue
I painted blue on top of blue, blue on top of blue
On top of blue On top of blue On top of blue
